Canyon Rim Woodlands TrailDescription

The 2+ mile Canyon Rim Woodlands Trail loops around a scenic ravine so noted for its diverse bird species as to be included on the Great Texas Coastal Birding Trail. Springtime brings warblers, gnatcatchers, vireos, and Louisiana thrushes.  Markers identify various kinds of trees and points of interest, including a gun emplacement used by Fort Polk trainees during WWII. Look for wild azaleas blooming in the spring.

Amenities: Hiking, bird watching.No restrooms. Bring your own water.

Location: On Texas Hwy 87 about half way between Hemphill and Newton.

Directions: Approximately 24 miles north of Newton (1.5 miles north of the intersection of Hwy 87 and Highway R255). Take Hwy. 87 25 miles south from Hemphill or 24 miles north from Newton to the parking area on the west side of Hwy 85 one-and-a-half miles north of the intersection of Hwy 87 and Highway R255.  GPS Coordinates: 31.06.945 N - 93.43.757 W. Note: Though the trail is well marked, the trailhead sign at the parking area has recently been reported missing.
