Trail Between the Lakes

Description

The Trail Between the Lakes winds through the Sabine National Forest, connecting Lake Sam Rayburn and Toledo Bend Reservoir. The well-marked, 28-mile trail, which runs from US Hwy 96 in sight of Sam Rayburn to the Lakeview Recreation Area on Toledo Bend, wanders through pine and hardwood forests, up and down East Texas’ gentle hills, across lovely stream corridors, and along Lake Toledo Bend. The trail crosses roads at a number of locations, providing access to shorter hikes.

Amenities: Hiking and primitive camping only. No horses, off-road vehicles, or mountain bikes allowed; some areas closed to camping, especially during hunting season.

Location: Sabine National Forest park office, 5050 Hwy. 21 East, Hemphill, TX 75948

Directions: To reach the western end of the trail from Lufkin, take Hwy 103 east for 40 miles. Turn right (south) on Hwy 96 and go 17 miles. Look for the sign for the trailhead. If you get to FM 201, you have gone a little too far.  To access the eastern end from Pineland, take FM 2426 east for 10 miles.  Turn right (south) on Highway 87 for 3 miles, then left (east) on FM 2928 for 3.5 miles to end of paved road.  Follow the signs to Lakeview (approx 4 miles).
