Caddo Mounds State Historical Site
Description
More than 1,200 years ago, a group of Caddo Natives known as the Hasinai built a village 26 miles west of present-day Nacogdoches, at what is now the Caddo Mounds State Historical Site. The site was the southwestern-most ceremonial center for the great Mound Builder culture. Today, three earthen mounds still rise from the lush Piney Woods landscape. The visitor center displays exhibits about everyday life and history of the early Caddo people. Caddo Mounds State Historic Site is a prehistoric village and ceremonial center located on the original El Camino Real de los Tejas trail. A 0.7-mile self-guided interpretive trail takes you to the Hasinai burial site, low temple, and ceremonial mounds. An additional trail along El Camino Real de los Tejas is available for scheduled tours.
