Big Sandy Trail

At Big Thicket National Preserve

Big Sandy TrailThe only trail in the Big Thicket National Preserve open to horses and mountain bikes, the Big Sandy Trail is an 18-miles round trip, with more topography than other trails in the preserve. The Big Sandy Trail meanders through a diverse collections of ecosystems - upland pine forests, beech-magnolia-loblolly pine slopes, and a floodplain forest of basket oak, sweetgum, hornbeam, and holly.


Amenities: Horseback riding and mountain bikes; closed during hunting season


Location and Directions:  From Dallardsville, go west on FM 1276 about a half mile to Sunflower Road.  Take Sunflower Road 2 miles or more to the trailhead.
