Neches River National Wildlife RefugeDescription 

The Neches River National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderland for wildlife – it’s home to most species of native East Texas wildlife and stopover habitat for migrating ducks, geese, songbirds and raptors.  It’s also a great place for families to get outdoors.  Trails access the iconic Neches River and the refuge’s pristine bottomland hardwood forests and varied habitats.  The Neches River Refuge awaits you at the Grand Opening on April 13, with guided nature walks, van tours, and activities for kids.  After April 13, the refuge will be open from sunrise to sunset, with primitive camping allowed by permit.

Amenities: Hiking, bird watching, wildlife viewing, limited camping.  Hunting, fishing, and other outdoor activities planned in the future as the refuge is developed.

Location: 262 W Highway 79 Jacksonville, TX 75766

On US Hwy 79 eleven miles southwest of Jacksonville, just east of the Neches River bridge

Directions: From Jacksonville, go southwest on US Hwy 79 for eleven miles.  Refuge sign on left just before Neches River bridge.  From Palestine, go northeast for 15 miles, cross the Neches River, then the refuge will be on your right.
